Talking about quantity in Slovak language

The genitive is much in demand after general quantity words like veľa „a lot, lots of, many, priveľa „ too much, too many and málo „ little, few.

Mám  veľa času.                I have a lot of time.

Mám priveľa času.             I have too much time.

Mám málo času.                I have little time.

Janko má veľa priateľov.             Janko has a lots of friends.

Janko má málo priateľov.             Janko has few friends.

And with phrases involving higher numerals of five or above, subject phrases with these words again count as neuter singular. Note also the question word koľko „ how many? „

Koľko tam bolo ľudí ?                    How many people were there ?

Bolo tam málo ľudí.                       Few people were there.

Bolo tam asi šesť ľudí.                  There were about six people there.

Other such words are niekoľko“ some, several“ mnoho“ many“ toľko( or tak veľa) so many, pár/ zopár“ a few, a couple“.

Poznám len niekoľko/zopár Slovákov.

I know only some/ a few Slovaks.

Toľko ľudí !           So many people !
